Jack Della Madallena came up victorious in the early hours of Sunday morning after defeating Belal Muhammad, breaking Muhammad’s 11 fight win streak. The Australian won via unanimous decision at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.
Madallena’s overall win streak is now 18 wins in a row, with his first title defence looking like it will be against the pound for pound number one, Islam Makhachev, who is looking to secure double champion status. Muhammad will have to go back to the drawing board as he has plenty of options at welterweight with the likes of Ian Garry, Sean Brady who are in title contention.
The co-main event saw Valentina Shevchenko defend her flyweight championship, as she beat Manon Fiorot via unanimous decision. Shevchenko has now racked up 10 title fight wins and is proving she is one of the best to ever do it. Shevchenko could be looking to defend her title against Natalia Silva or strawweight champion Zhang Weili.
Jose Aldo announced his retirement after suffering a controversial defeat to Canada’s Aiemann Zahabi. Aldo arguably won all three rounds, with the second round being close. The king of Rio scored a knockdown in the final round but all three judges gave the round to Zahabi. Zahabi ended up winning the bout by a unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the bout (29-28).
Also on the card was former flyweight champion Alexa Grasso who lost to Natalia Silva via unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the fight (30-27) in favour of the Brazilian. Silva could take Grasso’s number one contender spot this week after the rankings are updated. Benoit Saint Denis was the only fighter to get a finish on the main card after submitting Canada’s Kyle Prepolec via an arm-triangle choke, putting Saint Denis back into the win column.
