“Transformers One,” released in UK cinemas on October 11th, 2024. Renewing a fresh and bold reimagining of the beloved franchise. Directed by Josh Cooley, this fully CG-animated prequel takes us back to Cybertron which old time fans have been eagerly waiting for. Exploring the origins of iconic characters Optimus Prime and Megatron before they became enemies, known in their earlier days as Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry).
The story focuses on their friendship, set against the backdrop of an oppressive regime on Cybertron, as miners with dreams of a better future. With their journey toward the fabled ‘Matrix of Leadership’ sets the stage for the classic ‘friends-turned-enemies’ trope as D-16’s emotions rule over him and Orion Pax follows his hopes. The eventual fallout between Orion and D-16 drives the emotional core of the narrative, laying the foundation for the eventual conflict between Optimus and Megatron as one rises while the other falls.
The movie dives into themes of class struggle and social revolution, which adds a surprising layer of depth for a franchise primarily known for its action-packed spectacles Michael Bay took full advantage of with his own movie narrative from 2004.
Visually “Transformers One” blends photorealism with the authentic designs of the original 1984 cartoon bringing back enemy’s older fans are familiar with. Although some plot elements, like the inevitable betrayal, may seem predictable. The film compensates with tight pacing and strong performances from the voice cast, including Scarlett Johansson as the strong-willed Elita-1 and Keegan-Michael Key as the playful Bumblebee.
While the film’s finale succumbs to the franchise’s familiar bombastic tendencies, the script’s deeper emotional threads and coherent action scenes help it stand out as one of the stronger entries in the transformer’s series with its visuals and breathtaking voice acting.
Overall, “Transformers One” offers a thoughtful and entertaining addition to the Transformers universe. Reigniting the spark for both old fans and newcomers alike. Making all eager for the future movies by Josh Cooley with future antagonists like the Quintessons and Megatron being ready on the platter for a potential trilogy.
