Shoreditch sounded a little livelier Tuesday night as new and upcoming artists took the stage at Strongroom Bar for Off the Record’s underground live music showcase. Off The Record’s goal is to give artists a platform to connect with an audience and professionals within the music industry.
Starting the night off were brothers in Same. The duo performed one of their original songs called Chance Encounter. The band started slow, but led to the brothers stepping off stage and joining the crowd as they continued to play. Between their indie rock look and vocals, this duo created an exciting environment in the crowd, which was a perfect way to begin the event.
Up next was MYAH.
Female led band MYAH started their set off with soul filled vocals from lead singer Myah. The crowd began to loosen up and dance by this point in the night. Once the group performed their single Can I Call You Jane? it was visible of the fans they had in the crowd. Lyrics were being sung back to the band. Myah danced around stage while singing another original song Nothing Like This. Her lyrics “I’m trying to find the right things to say, but the words sound the same” were contradicted tonight, because MYAH did not sound the same in any song they performed. Each song seemed to have its own genre, and the group performed together perfectly. When asked what inspires MYAH’s music, lead singer Myah responded with “I want to make soul, fun, disco music,” and that’s exactly what she does.

Ending the event was last but certainly not least a performance from Oli Harris. Before the vocals were heard, you could tell this group was fun. Lead singer Oli’s look was colourful and full of character. It didn’t stop there though, the character showed through their music as the band performed one of their newest releases Chameleon Man. The song is easily danceable, and the crowd took full advantage of that. The underground venue was sonorous with a combination of Oli Harris and screaming fans.
Same. had a unique way to share their merchandise with fans, along with other stands selling with MYAH and Oli Harris’s merch. The brother’s duo printed their name onto thrifted and secondhand pieces of clothing. Some of these items were even worn by the brothers. This idea matches theirs’ and their fans’ look perfectly.
These three artists lit up a Tuesday night in Shoreditch. There were three different genres but one audience that enjoyed them all.
