As reports of bedbug sightings flood social media, Londoners find themselves scratching the itch of hypervigilance in response to the surge of infestations. Contrary to their name, bedbugs can be found in all sorts of places, such as libraries, cinemas, cars, and offices.

Bedbugs can be brown, yellow, or red. Their bites result in a mild itch and cause red swollen skin, but there are ways to prevent this from happening in all forms of everyday life.

Transportation

If commuting, check your seat and avoid resting on it but stand if possible. Look out for any blood, feces, or any bedbug shell. Keep personal belongings with you and avoid placing them on seats or the floor.

At Home

Put your clothes in the wash and set it too hot. For precautionary steps put your clothes in a tight sealed bag. Check items and examine for any signs of bedbugs. Declutter your space and clean it regularly as the little crawlers love confined spaces. Avoid purchasing used mattresses, bed covers, and other home furniture.

Shared Spaces

It is important to keep belongings in a compact space to avoid bedbugs crawling in crevices. Check all areas and avoid crowded spaces.

Experts say that in the past two decades, there has been a global resurgence in bedbugs.

It is in cities though, that there is a higher risk of infestation due to population density, frequent travelling, and shared accommodation.
