Yorkshire Cricket have announced they have appointed Anthony McGrath as head coach, on a 5-year deal, leaving Essex after 9 years with the team.
McGrath spent his career as an assistant coach, head coach and, as of recent, director of cricket.
He will be taking over from Ottis Gibson and has been confirmed he will start from the 1st of November.
Yorkshire’s interim chief executive officer Sanjay Patel had his say on the appointment, “During the past nine years with Essex, Anthony has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in English cricket” and “He is well renowned for his team’s attractive, attacking cricket, supporting and developing world class talent.”
McGrath played 242 first class matches for Yorkshire, and captained the side from 2008-2009, scoring 14,698 runs in his entire career as a player.
In 2016, he became the assistant head coach to former Yorkshire colleague, Chris Silverwood, and they both led Essex to promotion to Division 2, and then the Championship title in the following summer, the county’s first red-ball-top-flight triumph for 25 years.
But the main highlight came in 2019 when they won both the Championship and the T20 Blast, the first county to achieve that feat – and in the space of seven days.
During his tenure, Essex were established as one of Division 1’s strongest teams, never finishing below 4th in a Championship season.
Essex was also victorious in the Bob Willis trophy, a tournament that was introduced during Covid in 2020.
