After a successful fundraising from over 2,500 people, the world’s first vagina brick and mortar museum reopens its doors in the vibrant heart of Bethnal Green.
After having to shut its previous East London location due to the loss of a property guardianship, the museum set out to educate about the female anatomy and female pleasure, re-opened its doors permanently on the 4th of November on Poyser street in Bethnal Green, surpassing a fundraising target of £85,000.
The first exhibition is ‘with Endometriosis,’ it is running till the 3rd of March and is displayed on the ground floor, where temporary exhibitions are shown. There are multiple events and workshops happening; last week there was a workshop exploring black sexuality and pleasure with Rosemary Gardan and Ewa Dina for Black history month.
In an interview for a bookshop event, Florence Schechter, the founder of the museum says, ‘I found out that there is a Penis Museum in Iceland, which is great don’t get me wrong but there is no Vagina Museum anywhere in the world…and I was like, we should totally make one.’ The project was launched in 2017 in hopes of destigmatizing myths about the female body and celebrating it.
Tickets are free but curious minds are encouraged to donate for a small fee of £5. Opening hours are Thursday-Sunday: 10am-6pm.
