UFC 315 is taking place this weekend in the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The main event see’s welterweight champion Belal Muhammad take on Australia’s Jack Della Maddalena, which will decide the fate of the UFC lightweight championship.
Belal Muhammad is set to make his first title defence this weekend against top contender Jack Della Maddalena, who is currently riding on a hot 17 fight win streak. The welterweight title isn’t the only world title being spoken about this weekend as the winner of the Muhammad vs Maddalena will decide the main event of UFC 317 at International fight week for the lightweight title.
Islam Makhachev, the current mens pound for pound fighter and the undisputed lightweight champion is currently waiting patiently for the UFC 315 main event to play out. Makhachev, who has successfully defended his lightweight championship four times, is looking to move up a division and fight for the welterweight title to become a two weight world champion to fulfill his dream.
Ilia Topuira, former featherweight champion vacated his title recently as he decided he would like to move up to lightweight to fight Islam Makhachev for the undisputed world championship. This fight is currently on hold as it all depends on who wins the main event of UFC 315.
One of the plenty of reasons why this lightweight title fight has not been made yet is due to the relationship between Islam Makhachev and Belal Muhammad. Both champions would not like to fight each other out of respect as they are training partners, which is why the winner of the UFC 315 main event creates different outcomes. A win for Belal Muhammad would mean that light weight champion, Islam Makhachev will remain in his division and have one of the highly anticipated fights the UFC can make which is against Ilia Topuira.
If Jack Della Maddalena defeats Belal Muhammad, Islam Makhachev will take his opportunity to fight for the welterweight title to become a two weight world champion. If Islam Makhachev moved up a division it is still currently unknown whether he will vacate his lightweight belt, which would result Topuira to fight the next contender, Charles Oliveira for either a vacant title or for an interim title.
